Atmospheric ammonia is emerging increasingly as the key transboundary air pollutant that contributes impacts on terrestrial ecoystems. At the same time, ammonia is making an increasing relative contribution to particulate matter, with its associated human health risks. This increase is particularly a reflection of the success of European policies to reduce SO2 and NOx emissions. As a result, NH3 more and more dominates nitrogen and acidifying inputs, while reducing ammonia emissions and environmental impacts remain major challenges for the future.
This UNECE Expert Workshop is focused on several key questions regarding the detection of changes and quantification of environmental impacts due to ammonia. Following the classical format of UNECE expert workshops, it aims at reaching agreement on current scientific understanding and providing draft recommendations that can be useful to the Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution. The workshop is organized under the auspices of the following UNECE groups to which it will report the key findings and recommendations:
The organizers and the secretariat invite Parties’ experts, cooperating organizations and other experts to contribute to the workshop. The meeting is open for all relevant experts from Parties to the Convention to attend, although it should be noted that space is limited to approximately 60 places so early registration is important.
